What makes it Sicilian? The fact that the dough is plump and thick. What makes it summer? The ingredients are light and fresh. Got it? Good. Now go make it, because I know you’ll love it!
Ingredients needed
To make dough:
- 3 tsps active dry yeast
- 1 tbs honey
- 1 2 tbs water
- 1 tbs olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
In a bowl, combine yeast, water, honey and olive oil. Stir with a spoon and allow to sit for 10 minutes. After, add in the flour and salt. Stir with a spoon until ingredients are combined. Then take out dough with hands and roll into a ball and knead for a few minutes using a floured surface. Form a ball and coat dough in a light layer of olive oil. Place back into bowl and let stand, covered with a cloth or towel for 1 1/2 hours.
To make pizza
- 8 ounces fresh spinach
- 3 small radishes
- 1 tbs minced garlic
- 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 3 slices of deli ham of choice
- 2-3 ounces of brie
- 2-3 ounces of mozzarella
Once dough has risen, take out of bowl and knead into the shape you would like your pizza to be. Then begin layering the toppings. Bake in an oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
I just got home from traveling in Sicily, where I tasted the BEST pizza ever. The crust was soft and flaky! It reminded me a bit of naan. Is yours like that? I thought it might be due to olive oil, which you indeed have used.
The topping I had was probably seafood, as everything was seafood in Sicily. Highly recommend going there 🙂 !
