So you buy yourself an ingredient for a recipe. Your recipe calls for 2 ounces of the ingredient, but the smallest quantity you can purchase is 12 ounces. You know the struggle. Especially when it comes to fruit, shelf-lives are short. So, unless you’re ready to make the recipe over and over again, coming up with different ways to spin the same ingredient is essential!
Cranberries are something that you can use in countless ways during the holidays, I created 3 simple ideas in getting the most out of a bag of cranberries without wasting anything!
The first way, is a simple cocktail garnish. Pop a few cranberries on a large toothpick and lay across the rim of a glass and you have yourself a festive addition to any holiday cocktail. Like I did here with my Cranberry Orange Margarita.
Secondly, cranberry simple syrup. One 8 ounce bag of cranberries, 2 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar gets you a delicious cranberry syrup perfect in addition to cocktails or desserts! Just cook on medium heat until simmering, then change temperature to low-heat until cranberries are tender. Let cool, then drain the syrup through a strainer and into a jar for storing.
Lastly, what to do with the leftover cranberries? Now, that those cranberries are even sweeter after creating the simple syrup, use them to muddle into the bottom a glass for a cranberry libation. I created a Muddled Cranberry Spiced Rum Cocktail with 1 tbs muddle cranberry, 2 ounces dark spiced rum, 1 ounce club soda and 1/2 ounce orange bitters. Serve with ice.
And there you have it, 3 ways to use left over cranberries!
