Sometimes you fall in love with a sport, because you become passionate about playing it. Other times it’s because the sport brings the people you love most together and making memories. That’s the special place baseball holds in my heart. Today I’m teaming up with adidas to share why baseball is important to me and how it’s helped shape my family’s history and my very own love story.
From childhood to falling in love, baseball has been at the center of it all. I grew up with an older brother who played baseball since little league and was even coached by my dad some seasons. From spending time in the bleachers watching my brother play to inviting myself into the practice games my dad and my brother would have in our backyard, I started to love baseball not so much because of the game, but because anywhere there was baseball there were fun family times.
It didn’t matter that baseball wasn’t considered a girl’s sport, my dad never talked me into softball. Instead, him and my brother helped me learn how to catch a pop fly and the infamous “squish the bug” baseball swing.
Although my brother stopped playing baseball in high school, just before it was time to step away from the bleachers, when I was in high school I met my now husband who was a varsity baseball player and the game of baseball grew even closer to my heart. After playing at the University of Miami for 3 years, he then went on to play professional baseball in the MiLB for 5 years. This meant 5 years of countless flights all over the country to watch him play baseball. Although those were the toughest 5 years of my life because of the many months we spent apart from each other, we both owe a lot to those years. We grew together, learned together and made some good memories along the way.
So, the game of baseball runs in my family and my love story and will always hold a special place in my heart. There’s a reason why “playing catch” is often synonymous with making family memories. There’s nothing like a glove, a ball while chatting about nothing and everything with the people you love.
