Sweet Spicy Crispy Tofu

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 block tofu extra-firm and dried for at least 30 minutes
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tsp garlic minced
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 1/2 tbsp sriracha, can adjust depending on your spice liking
  • 1 1/2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp white rice vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp sesame oil for cooking

Directions:

To prepare the tofu: wrap it in a few paper towels and place between two plates with something a little heavy on top of the plate to press the moisture out of the tofu-nothing too heavy though so that the tofu doesn’t fall apart. Leave it like this for at least 30-minutes. (I prefer to do this the night/day before or for at least 1-2 hours to realllly get all of the moisture out) Or get this tofu press like I did!
Once the tofu is ready to cook, begin mixing the garlic, pepper, honey, ginger, brown sugar, sriracha, soy sauce and the white rice vinegar in a bowl and set it aside. Then cut the tofu into about 1-inch cubes and coat each side with corn starch, doing this is what gives it that crispy texture and taste.
In a large skillet, heat the sesame oil on medium-high. When the oil is hot, add the tofu cubes, cooking them for about 2 minutes on each side. You’ll see the tofu start to become browned on each side and that’s when you  know it’s done. Be sure to be gentle with the tofu, as it can crumble if you’re too rough tossing it.
Once tofu is done, turn the heat off and wait 1 minute (for the pan to cool down just a bit) then add the sauce to the skillet and mix together with the tofu until the tofu is perfectly glazed. Serve with jasmine rice, brown rice, over salad or however you’d like!
